COHI Southern Region in Action

THE SOUTHERN REGION

The Southern Region includes COHI activity in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee. There are strong, parish-based Centers located throughout the Region. There are two Centers in Tuscaloosa, Alabama: a long standing and vibrant Center at ChristChurch and a new Center at Canterbury Chapel. There is another one in Columbia, South CarolinaArkansas is the only state with a diocesan organization, and this has enabled CoH to grow across the state.

The Community of Hope was introduced in the Diocese of Arkansas in 2001 through the enthusiastic encouragement of the Rt. Rev. Larry Maze, then Diocesan Bishop. The first class was held at St. Peter’s, Conway in the spring of 2001, and included those who had been named by the bishop as facilitators for the program in the diocese as well as members of the St. Peter’s congregation.

Since that beginning, training centers have been established and classes held at St. Michael’s and St. Margaret’s, Trinity Cathedral, and St. James’ United Methodist Church in Little Rock; Holy Trinity, Hot Springs Village and St. Luke’s, Hot Springs; Holy Cross Lutheran and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Mountain Home; St. Andrews, Cherokee Village; St. Paul’s, Fayetteville; St. Theodore’s, Bella Vista; the First United Methodist Church in Bryant; and the newest Center, St. John’s, Harrison. Two other centers are in the process of developing. These centers also have included trainees from other communities including West Memphis, Newport, North Little Rock, Stuttgart, Benton, Harrison and Van Buren.
In 2002 a Diocesan Council was formed to oversee the work of Community of Hope in Arkansas, to maintain communication within the Community and publicize the work Severalof the Community throughout the diocese. The Council sponsors an annual retreat in the fall for all Chaplains, and offers other opportunities for continuing education several times during the year.

Ann Baskette, St. James UMC, serves as Regional Representative for the Southern Region on the Community of Hope International Board. Madge Brown, St. Michael’s, Little Rock, is the Diocesan Coordinator. Brother Michael Gallagher will be the retreat leader for the 2009 Retreat at CampMitchell, the diocesan camps and conferences center.

Several Centers in the Region have gone inactive for various reasons. This includes Columbia, South Carolina and Covington, Louisiana. There is new interest including in Montgomery, Alabama; Brevard, North Carolina.

Southern Region Members Attend Annual COHI Conference at Camp Allen

A report on the Conference from a St. James lay chaplain:

Six representatives from the St. James Community of Hope Training Center attended the Conference and enjoyed the speakers, workshops and fellowship. Highlights of this year's conference were many, but here are a few according to the six attendees (from the Southern Region):  The Taize Service was very impressive.  Having the cross, the candles and the icons arranged in the center of two semi-circles of chairs made for an intimate setting.  The music, the words, the silence and the optional participation all combined for a worshipful, reverent experience.  When I saw 20 minutes of silence on the program, I began to fret.  However, the time passed so quickly that I was amazed when it was over.  I so loved our time together and especially getting to know our Arkansas members a little better.  I felt God continuing to knit our hearts together as we shared, listened and worshipped.  The call back to silence was a great encouragement to me.  The "noise of the world" can creep in so subtly that we can soon forget what silence can accomplish in our lives.  I love the call to LISTEN, both in th silence and in our time with the people God has place in our lives.  I also love the call to PRESENCE  To me this means the art of "being present" both with our God and with those around us.  Having been involved with the COH since 2003, I believe this year's conference was the best ever for a number of reasons.  I believe our world and even our own country is hungry for a sense of community and stability in these difficult times we are all facing.  One of the things that meant most to me was the gentle reminder that without Jesus Christ I haven't a ministry.  He is my foundation and makes me who I am to others.  Top ""listen with the ear of my heart" can only be done if I am reading scripture and listening to what God is saying to me.  He opens my heart to see others as he sees them.  Then I in turn can be truly available to "listen with the ear of my heart".  The final worship service - The Blessing of the Hands - was so inspirational.  Seated in a semicircle and focusing on the cross and other items from the Taize service was very centering.  Beautiful music, silent moments (very donducive to worship) led up to incredible ending - holding out my hands for someone to make the sign of the cross with oil on each palm, then bless my hands to be for "God's service."  I was overwhelmed with God's presence and love.  As you can read, this conference was a very special two days and the COH is a very special group for not only St. James, but for our community.
